In the latest edition of the ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking, the U.S. finds itself narrowly in third place behind Russia at No. 1 and Spain, the 2008 Davis Cup champion, at No. 2.

The U.S., the 2007 Davis Cup champion, has 26,455.00 points, just behind Spain's 26,493.75 and Russia's 27,647.50. Russia was No. 1 in the last rankings and the U.S. was No. 2. Spain was in the No. 4 position but winning the Davis Cup title, 3-1, over Argentina on Nov. 23 boosted it up to second place.

Argentina was previously in third place, but now drops to fourth.

The U.S. reached the Davis Cup Semifinals in 2008, defeating Austria in the opening round and France in the quarterfinals, both by scores of 4-1. The team, led by Andy Roddick, then fell to world No.1 Rafael Nadal and Spain, 4-1 in the semifinals in Madrid.

Russia last won the Davis Cup title in 2006 and also reached the semifinals in 2008, losing 3-2 to Argentina. In 2007, Russia reached the Davis Cup final, falling to the U.S. 4-1 in Portland, Ore.

The 2009 Davis Cup first round ties will be in March, with the U.S. hosting Switzerland, Spain hosting Serbia and Russia facing Romania amongst other matchups.
